An attack by a 29-year-old suspect in New York has left at least eight people dead and 12 injured. The man, who drove a truck onto a cycling path and mowed down pedestrians and cyclists for several blocks before hitting a school bus and coming to a stop, was shot at by police and has been arrested.

United States President Donald Trump has already reacted, tweeting: “In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!”

The incident occurred in the Tribeca area, in Lower Manhattan. According to news reports the truck, which sped along the path knocking down several people, had been rented.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio called it as “cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians” and said “eight innocent people have lost their lives and a dozen more are injured… Please keep their families and loved ones in your prayers”.

The Mayor said “we know that this action was intended to break our spirit. But we also know that New Yorkers are strong, New Yorkers are resilient and our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence and an act meant to intimidate us.”

He thanked the police and first responders, particularly the police officer who stopped the driver causing more deaths.

De Blasio said the man appeared to be holding two handguns when he emerged from the vehicle, and made a statement “consistent with a terror attack” before he was shot in the abdomen by the police officer. A pellet gun and paintball gun were allegedly recovered from the scene.

The mayor said it’s Halloween night and he knows people will be on edge for the next few days, and asked New Yorkers to be vigilant and “if you see something, say something”.

Trump said in another tweet: “My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack. God and your country are with you!”
