World Rugby‏ has confirmed that South Africa has not been awarded the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2023, despite being nominated by World Rugby as the preferred candidate.

In a tweet Wednesday afternoon, World Rugby said: “Congratulations to France who has been awarded Rugby World Cup 2023 following World Rugby Council’s vote #RWC2023.”

The vote was conducted by secret ballot.

Many lamented the fact that Ireland didn’t get it. One social media user, Martin Killick, maybe summed up the feelings for many when he said “Sad it’s not Ireland but to be honest I will go to France to see it – for safety reasons I would never visit SA – I am sure I am not alone in that view. Bravo France ?? looking forward to it already.”

World Rugby’s Bill Beaumont said all three presented outstanding bids and they realise how disappointing it must be for those countries (South Africa and Ireland) who put their expertise, “hearts and souls” into their bid.
