Heartbreaking footage of a starving polar bear, captured by National Geographic (NG) photographer Paul Nicklen and filmmakers from a conservation group called Sea Legacy, provides proof of climate change, says NG.

The team was on Baffin Island, Canada, when they saw the bear which probably had just hours to live. It is illegal to feed polar bears in Canada so the crew had to stand by… weeping.

Nicklen said: “We stood there crying – filming with tears rolling down our cheeks.”

As temperatures rise and sea ice melts, the polar bears are losing access to their main source of food – seals.

Nicklen said he filmed the bear because he didn’t want it to die in vain. “When scientists say bears are going extinct, I want people to realize what it looks like. Bears are going to starve to death. This is what a starving bear looks like…”
