With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday 13 May 2018, South African mothers have been looking forward to being pampered and spoilt… but one local supermarket chain appears to have other plans for Mom! (UPDATE: Checkers apologises for inaccurate promo photo taken while moving merchandise.)

A photo allegedly taken in a Checkers’ store, shows a display of cleaning products together with a sign saying “Gifts to Wow Mom”!! It appears to be a promotion with special savings on the items.

Wow Checkers, said many disgruntled un-wowed Moms. Some have taken to Checkers’ Facebook page to post the above picture, together with comments asking what the shop was thinking. (“They weren’t,” said one social media user.)

“Cleaning products for Mother’s Day? Seriously?” asked Rene Oosthuysen. “Epic fail,” said others.

Many SA moms have been unsure whether to be more offended by the sexism or the thought that cleaning is Mom’s idea of a dream gift!

One Capetonian joked: “Can’t wait to clean house on Mother’s Day ??”

Nic Mayger said: “Hey Checkers, is this a revival of the 1970’s? ‘Wow Mom’ with household cleaners. Embarrassing is an understatement.”

Charleen van Staden said: “What a joke. I can’t even believe the manager(s) approved it! No to racism, no sexism!”

“It wins hands down for Gender Stereotyping,” said one commenter.

Theories have surfaced that the promo was meant tongue-in-cheek or that the point of sale was erected before removing the items and replacing with the actual Mother’s Day promotional products.

UPDATE: Checkers has responded and confirmed the photo was taken whilst moving merchandise.
