Former Parktown Boys High School water-polo coach, Collan Rex, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison.

The 23-year-old, a former Parktown Boys learner himself, was found guilty in September of 144 charges of sexual offences, as well as a further 12 charges of common assault.

According to the SABC’s Sashin Naido Rex the High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Thursday has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the 144 counts of sexual abuse, and three years for the 12 counts of assault.

A report from a Social Development Department social worker as well as victim impact statements from several of the school’s pupils have been heard over the past two days in court. These included that he ‘choked’ many (which he claimed was “horseplay”) and touched their genital area.

It was revealed in the report that Rex himself was “exposed to a culture which normalised and encouraged inappropriate sexual behaviour by fellow learners and adults such as his coach in the school” whilst he was a boarder at the school.
