This is not a South African story, but a human story. An American mother’s post, searching for an airplane traveller – Passenger 2D – has gone viral as the man’s kindness has touched hearts around the world, from the US – where it started – to Australia, from the UK to South Africa.

Since Kelsey Rae Zwick published her post on Thursday, it has been liked on Facebook by over half a million people… as it restores faith in humankind.

Kelsey was travelling from Orlando to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with one of her twin daughters who requires treatment. Kelsey was carrying a diaper bag, an oxygen machine and a smile on her face.

And a kind stranger not only took the time to notice… but gave up his first class seat for her. This is what Kelsey wrote:

To the man in 2D. Today you were traveling from Orlando to Philly. I don’t know you, but I imagine you saw us somewhere. I was pushing a stroller, had a diaper bag on my arm and also lugging an oxygen machine for my daughter. We had smiles on our faces as we were headed to see her “friends” at CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia). We pre- boarded the plane, got cozy in our window seat and made jokes to those around us about having to sit by my yelling-but-happy baby. The flight attendant came over and told me you were waiting to switch seats. You were giving up your comfortable, first class seat to us.
Not able to hold back tears, I cried my way up the aisle while my daughter Lucy laughed! She felt it in her bones too… real, pure, goodness. I smiled and thanked you as we switched but didn’t get to thank you properly.

Sooo… thank you. Not just for the seat itself but for noticing. For seeing us and realizing that maybe things are not always easy. For deciding you wanted to show a random act of kindness to US. It reminded me how much good there is in this world. I can’t wait to tell Lucy someday. In the meantime… we will pay it forward. AA 588 passenger in seat 2D, we truly feel inspired by your generosity.
Please share so we can say thanks!

His kindness has not only touched Kelsey… but inspired people around the world.

One of the hospital team treating Kelsey’s 11-month-old daughter, wrote:

I can’t help but to keep scrolling through and reading these comments.
I’ve cried at EVERY. single. one. of them. My heart is so touched.
Kelsey emulates kindness and positivity and will forever deserve those two qualities back from others. I can’t explain how much this family and Kelsey means to me. Thank you, passenger 2D. Your act of kindness today goes beyond the switching of seats ❤️ it’s touched many.

One of Kelsey’s friends wrote:

To have been seen by this man and for him to extend himself in such a quiet, but significant way absolutely tugs every single one of my heart strings. ? Thank you Passenger 2D for showing kindness to my beautiful friend who, despite her smiles and brave face, was carrying a heavy load of stress on her shoulders and in her heart. It is very truly the little things that mean the most.
