Thursday, 2 May, will be a day of mourning in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) for the victims of the floods that devastated Durban and surrounding areas on Easter Monday.

FB/Gift of the Givers – in the region delivering food hampers and blankets to 150 people in Umlazi where 50 houses were washed away.

The day of mourning was declared today by KZN Premier Willie Mchunu during a media briefing, according to SABC News. eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede was also provide updates on the progress and action taken since the tragic day of 22 April 2019.

At least 200 homes were damaged leaving 1,400 people displaced and 70 dead, said Mchunu. Two people in Durban are still sadly missing.

The infrastructure damage is estimated at R1.1 billion. Mchunu said there is no time frame yet for re-accommodating those affected by the floods.

“We have asked the Department of Human Settlements to make it a priority to assist them,” said Mchunu.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday in Durban.

“We invite all citizens, interfaith formations and all sectors of society to participate in this day of prayer and mourning. The main event will take place at Curries Fountain Sports Field this coming Thursday from 9am, more details will be announced in due course,” Mchunu said.
