The ever-growing number of South African expats living in Thailand are about to get a major taste of home, with a new SA-flavoured restaurant in Bangkok due to open its doors to the public within a fortnight! The restaurant – Shebeen – is billed as the first fully-fledged South African restaurant to open in Bangkok. UPDATE: Launch of new South African restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand – Madibaz!

Owner Charles Greeff told SAPeople that diners will be able to expect lekker dishes on offer like Bobotie and rice, Vetkoek and mince, pies and mash, and Boerewors. There will be Chakalaka and Pap, Bunny Chow, Potjiekos and of course Malva pudding and melktert for dessert. Drinks will include “milkshakes, Rooibos tea, Moer koffie and Ceres juice”. And that’s just some of what will be on offer!

Here’s a little more about the passion behind this exciting new venture…

Interview with Charles Greeff – by Dewald Alberts

Charles and his wife, Wasana(Gai) are “Bangkok’s biltong barons” – they are the creators of fantastically flavoured biltong and owners of Siam BBQ Co (which sells South African products).

Charles Greeff and his wife Wasana(Gai) in Thailand

I met Charles in Bangkok through a mutual friend and as most South Africans abroad, we spoke loudly in our native tongue, as if we were old friends. He told me about this idea of his, to make high-quality, affordable South African delicacies available in the East, where more-and-more Saffas are moving each year.

I could hear the passion and love for his biltong in the way he spoke, and from there on, I knew that Siam BBQ Co was going to be a hit.

The first batch was made and it tasted like home. Even those in our American and Canadian circle have had their tongues twisted over this taste sensation from South Africa, and have become some of Charles’s biggest customers.

“Lekker mense!! We are almost done (preparing the restaurant for its opening) ???? get ready for a lekker kuier!!” Photos supplied.

With orders coming in from Chiang Mai, Bangkok  all the way down to Phuket, the proof is really in the pudding on how high quality his beef is and with new additions like droëwors, boerewors, burger patties and the old time favourite garage pie coming in soon, you are really doing yourself a disservice by not checking out the website. (Items also include Ouma’s Rusks, chutney, koeksisters.)

We have had many a braai under the Thai sky… where we talk about the future of this business.

A family man at heart, Charles hopes to create something to be passed on for generations, while also introducing some South African spice to the super spicy Thai culture.

He aims to unite all South Africans, expatriates and tourists alike, under our beautiful flag. Bringing cultures and nations together to appreciate one of SA’s favourite snacks as a dive into a taste of the Rainbow Nation.

Siam BBQ Co., Smaak tog te lekker!
