South Africans are still reeling from the brutal murder of a traditional healer, Anele Hoyana (40), in the Eastern Cape over the weekend, by his so-called friend Fritz ‘Majeke’ Joubert, who shouted “Amandla”, “Viva” and “I’m Staying” in video footage on the night of the killing.
Social media page #ImStaying has responded to Joubert’s multiple references to the page – which many people heard in sickening videos that have been shared on social media.
In one video (which 45-year-old Joubert himself posted), he introduces himself as a “proud South African” and says “hashtag hence I’m Staying”. In another he says “I’m Staying Hashtag Transkei”. In the earlier video he’s wearing a Springbok jersey, but in the later one his shirt is off. He rants about being ‘the chosen one’, why people hate him, and why he’s not ‘mal‘ (mad). He also points at Hoyana and says he is Satan.
The horrific murder – in which Joubert beat Hoyana to death with the end of his rifle – took place in the early hours of Saturday morning on Joubert’s farm near Gonubie. A disagreement had broken out between Joubert (who was apparently a contractor for Eskom, and had allegedly been planning to breed wild cats) and Hoyana who was reportedly training Joubert to be a sangoma, according to the SABC.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) were called to the scene – at Geluksdal farm, Brakfontein – and it is understood that Joubert was shot by police in self-defence during a scuffle.
Hoyana’s fiancee and children (a baby and toddler) were apparently living on Joubert’s property, according a a SAPS spokesperson, and were socialising at Joubert’s house when a disagreement broke out that escalated into a physical fight and subsequent murder. Joubert also allegedly kidnapped the two children by grabbing them and locking them in a bathroom. Hoyana’s distraught fiancee can be seen and heard in the videos, which were filmed by a neighbour who was there.
On Tuesday, #ImStaying posted a statement saying that the Page “as a collective group offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to Anele Hoyana and his family involved in the tragedy which occurred over the weekend.
“#ImStaying NPC, like the rest of our country, is horrified at the actions of a single deranged person and the release of these videos into the public domain.
“These actions, videos and the sharing of them has now become a priority investigation for the SA Police Services and has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with our movement.
As we all know #ImStaying is a movement of positivity, peace, love and unity, and as such we condemn this reprehensible act in the strongest possible terms.”
On Friday, Joubert had posted a message, four hours before the video, saying:
WHY LIVE TO DIE ANOTHER DAY IF TODAY IS THE PERFECT DAY TO DIE”
aka … PRINCE fritz “MAJEKE” joubert
KAN NIE WAG OM TE GAAN RUS OP DIE MAAN NIE!!!!🇿🇦🌈🏆🦁🌙🙏🏻
Within 24 hours he had killed Hoyana, and was dead himself.
An East London police spokesperson said SAPS is investigating a case of kidnapping and murder; while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is separately investigating the death of Joubert.
According to SAPS, Joubert had called several neighbours to join him for drinks before midnight, and one of them shared one of the videos and notified police. Hoyana’s brother told the SABC the two men had been friends for a long time, but that Joubert had got particularly angry on the night of the killing.
Police said they discovered firearms, ammunition and a large police flag on the property.
