Welcome to the Lock Up/Down Cartoon. As we are going to be cooped up at home for the next few weeks, Piet Frans (aka Pieter Kruger) has decided we should still try have some fun.

Kruger is a former lawyer who spent 13 years in The Hague prosecuting war criminals at the Yugoslav War Crimes Tribunal. Now retired, he’s back home living in Knysna… and says he always drew, but has only now got the time to indulge this hobby.

“The idea for this series came to me early in the morning on the day of the lockdown,” says Piet. “If I can bring some pleasure in this strange time, I am happy.

“Stay safe everybody, and here are the first five episodes…”

Gee, our downstairs neighbour must be pretty stinky by now. He sat in his green underpants all day, and he didn’t shower or shave!

Downstairs drank beer and played games all night….

Aah, downstairs appears to have some remorse about his first day in lockdown. We’ll see. And upstairs is planning her day too. We’ll see tonight how they got on.

Downstairs spent the day cleaning (himself and his apartment), while upstairs baked a bread. They are both preparing for Saturday evening alone.

Leftover curry from Downstairs’ fridge, coupled with too much beer, has caught up with him. Upstairs is hooked on Jack Reacher’s new adventure.

They both made it through the night, but Downstairs has decided to launder his bedding, and pop by the supermarket for food supplies. (He has realised he needs more than only beer. Meanwhile, upstairs is preparing a Sunday pasta lunch….

Upstairs is keeping it together, but it seems Downstairs’ day was pretty disastrous. And it’s not over yet….

Upstairs has slept well and is bright and chirpy. She is planning to take part in one of the multitude of social media challenges today.
Downstairs is not out of the woods yet….

Upstairs has at last prevailed over his laundry, but there is more bad news for him. Upstairs is getting into a challenge on Instagram. The original challenge is also available on Facebook at “Which painting can you make at home”.

Upstairs is admiring her challenge entry, and how many likes she has collected. It is at this very moment that Downstairs, whose apartment is nearly normal again, decides to take out his saxophone. He hasn’t touched his sax in over three years….

Downstairs has slept well for the first time, and feels pretty good after his saxophone playing last night. He has also implemented some measures to keep his laundry to a minimum.
Upstairs is distraught. Her cellphone broke when it hit the ceiling last night. She just fell onto her bed and wept in despair.

Upstairs is systematically working through the five (or seven) stages of loss. She is at stage two – denial.
Downstairs is relaxed and is connecting with his friends and family.
South Africa Cartoon Lockdown
Upstairs has progressed to the third sage of loss – anger. Fuelled by burning anger, she has tidied the apartment and is now taking a steamy shower. Her mind is dwelling on dark thoughts.
Downstairs has cooked himself Chinese noodles and is taking a break from the news.
