GAUTENG – Seventeen rhino horns were seized at a warehouse in Kempton Park, South Africa, on Monday. The seizure of the valuable haul was thanks to a multi-disciplinary approach driven operation by Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Crime Intelligence, Customs, and Environmental Affairs.
The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (HAWKS) said in a statement on Tuesday that authorities had received intelligence regarding a suspicious consignment which was dropped off at a warehouse in a crate declared as chicken food mixture destined for Kuala Lumpur.
Upon searching the consignment, authorities found a large blue geyser and discovered seventeen big and small rhino horns weighing about 72.40kg wrapped in foil.
Police say they are following on information regarding the suspect’s identity.
