A doctor in the Eastern Cape has developed a relatively simple device that could save the lives of many! The local doctor from Frere Provincial Hospital will be featured on Carte Blanche this Sunday.

Presenter Derek Watts says: “While South Africa focuses primarily on the vaccine rollout, another vital element – oxygen – is somewhat overlooked in the ongoing fight against COVID-19. Across the country, oxygen supplies are critically low and rural areas are worst-hit. But a doctor in the Eastern Cape has developed a relatively simple device that could save the lives of many.”  (You can watch the show on Sunday 24 January in South Africa on DStv Now or stream it overseas in most countries from Tues 26  January on Showmax if you’re abroad.)

OxERA – a Breath of Fresh Air in COVID-19’s Second Wave

For doctors on the frontline of the COVID-19 fight, manpower and resources have been stretched to the limit as the deadly second wave continues to ravage the country. With oxygen suppliers battling to keep up with the demand, Carte Blanche meets the Eastern Cape doctor with a unique combination of skills, training and friends that have enabled him to devise the ingenious OxERA device.

Already recognised by the government’s regulatory authorities, the proudly local invention has enabled doctors to help some critically ill patients receive oxygen and prevent their lungs from collapsing – for many, the difference between life and death. LIFE ON THE EDGE

Durban’s Drug Turf War

The shooting of alleged Durban drug lord Yaganathan “Teddy Mafia” Pillay led to an unimaginably barbaric scene when gangsterism and mob justice collided in a community beset by poverty and drug addiction. The people of Shallcross have been caught in a violent drug turf war that’s claimed seven lives in drive-by shootings in just 13 months. In a community where drug lords are said to enjoy the protection of the community and alleged crooked cops, Carte Blanche explores the driving forces that ended in blood on the streets as police appeared ineffective. GLOBAL INVESTIGATION

Tinder – a Predator’s Playground?

A soulmate at the right-swipe of your finger. Smart phone dating apps unlock a smorgasbord of options, unleashing artificial intelligence to find you the perfect match in your geographic vicinity. For that reason, a dating app like Tinder – by the company’s own count – has been downloaded more than 400 million times and has over 6 million active users, earning its parent company Match Group over a billion dollars annually since 2019. Tinder is billed as ‘the largest, hottest community of singles in the world’. Now, ABC’s award-winning investigations team delves into the dark side of Tinder as evidence emerges that the app is putting users at risk of sexual assault and rape from predators who use the app as a hunting ground for new victims.
