Disinformation, bad science and fake news have spiked to unprecedented levels as the globe has been battered by COVID-19 for over a year. This week Carte Blanche takes some of South Africans’ most frequently asked COVID-19 questions to some of the country’s top scientists.

The COVID-19 Infodemic: Dispelling Disinformation

The WHO coined the description: an infodemic. To a nation firmly in the grip of the second infection wave, facing the death of loved ones every day and a scarcity of vaccines as they become available, President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote in his regular open letter that “… (w)hen it comes to fighting a deadly pandemic like this, honesty and trust are just as valuable as any vaccine.”

Committed to credible information from expert sources that can help viewers take the best decisions, Carte Blanche investigates how disinformation, a lack of transparency and fear can combine to fuel the pandemic. The current affairs show takes some of the most frequently asked questions to some of the country’s top scientists.

The Road Accident Fund is supposed to be a lifeline for thousands of drivers who are seriously injured in collisions every year. It’s government’s insurance to help people rebuild their lives – every motorist pays for cover through the fuel levy. But what to do if the kitty dips ever-deeper into the red? The RAF is broke, drowning in hundreds of thousands of claims, and now it’s at war with its former panel attorneys who want to liquidate the fund over unpaid bills. Its huge debts pose a risk to the fiscus. The new CEO wants to change the model so that claimants don’t wait years for their settlements. Will it work? Nabbing the Retirement Home Killers

Motivated by money, two young men set out to con their way into retirement villages from the west of Johannesburg to Mbombela in Mpumalanga. In what might have appeared to be just a robbery gone wrong, they murdered two elderly women, were arrested, and while out on bail, killed another. It was such a simple modus operandi that they may have gotten away with many more attempts, were it not for the sharp detective work and collaboration between the community and police that finally put an end to their killing spree.  Kataza’s Great Trek

Rarely have the fortunes of one animal grabbed as many headlines as Kataza – a magnificent chacma baboon originally from a troop in the mountains near the village Kommetjie from where City of Cape Town officials removed him for raiding homes. Darting and relocating him to Tokai unleashed a social media storm. Petitions and even a high court application followed. Homeowners, scientists and government argued for euthanasia. Animal welfare activists put their foot down. In the end, the NSPCA stepped in and found him a new home – 2000km away in Limpopo. Carte Blanche accompanied him on his great journey north.
