The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 impact-based Warning for snow, and says it is valid for today (Fri 27 Aug) into tomorrow, for parts of the Western and Northern Cape provinces.

“These conditions will spread to the Eastern Cape and KZN high-ground from overnight tonight into tomorrow (Saturday),” said SAWS.

The weather service also confirmed low-level snow near Ceres in the Western Cape this morning.

Cape Town photographer Esa Alexander captured some winter wonderland footage, showing the locals enjoying the ground-level snow outside Matroosberg Reserve in Ceres. More snow is expected during the day, as per SAWS warning.

Earlier this week a hoax video had done the rounds, forecasting snow for Gauteng this weekend. Although the news was fake, an intense cold front was expected. SAWS says the “numerical model predictions together with historical observations do not suggest snowfall in GP at this stage”.

It is however a bitterly cold and wet day in the western half of SA today, and windy conditions are expected over most of the interior of the country.
