Manchester United football icon Cristiano Ronaldo (37) has announced the tragic loss of one of his twin babies. In a heartfelt statement, signed by Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez (28), the couple said they had lost their newborn baby son but revealed their new daughter had survived.

“It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our baby boy. It’s the worst pain any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all the care and support they provided. We are devastated and ask for privacy at this difficult time. Our boy you are our angel. We will love you forever.”

Just earlier this month Ronaldo, who has embraced fatherhood, had posted a photo saying “family is everything”. For him, family has always come first. When he grew up in Portugal, the youngest of four children, he reportedly cried daily for a year when he first left the family to join Sporting Lisbon. Ronaldo already has a three-year-old daughter Alana Martina with Georgina; as well as an 11-year-old son, Christiano Jr and four-year-old twins (Mateo and Eva Maria).

The couple had announced they were expecting twins in October 2021, and in an Instagram video in December they revealed the genders.

Messages of support have poured in. Manchester City said: “Everyone at Manchester City sends our deepest condolences to you and Georgina. 💙”

Manchester United said: “Your pain is our pain, @Cristiano 💔 Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time.”

Sir Kenny Dalglish said: “Sending our heartfelt condolences to you and your family for your unimaginable loss.”

Condolences also poured in from Leeds United, Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur and many more.

Premier League said: “The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the Premier League are with you and your family, Cristiano.”
