A legend’s rise to fame: The birth of South Africa’s greatest rapper and a boxer

Cassper’s passion began from the young age of 12 when he first started rapping. He later on took interest in multiple sports and kept himself physically active, especially in boxing.

In 2008, Cassper relocated to Johannesburg where he decided to be a rapper and music producer after dropping out from school. Instead of playing it safe and pursuing a career he didn’t want, Cassper fought for his dream to become an artist at the age of 28.

‘I told my parents that I’d rather chase my dream, which I believe is going to work.’

Following the timeline of Cassper Nyovest’s career

‘04 to ‘08: From rap groups to record labels

Cassper’s rapping career started when he formed a group called ‘Childhood Gangsta’ with his friends in 2004. He later left to join ‘Slow Motion’, another rapper group with the popular record producer Aashish Gangaram from Ganja Beatz.

After dropping out of high school in 2007 at the age of 16, Cassper decided to sign with Impact Sounds, the same record label artists Morafe and Tuks Senganga were signed in. However, he left the company in 2008 due to creative differences and has since become an independent artist.

Early 2010s: Establishing his name

Soon after, Cassper got discovered by the popular rapper and his childhood idol HHP. And later on, the two collaborated wherein Cassper featured in HHP’s album Dumela for the song Wamo Tseba Mtho.

This collaboration brought the spotlight on Cassper, forever changing his life. He then started performing all over South Africa and even went to neighbouring countries in the continent such as Botswana, Ghana, Lesotho, Namibia and Mozambique.

During his rise to fame in 2013, Cassper released his own debut single Gusheshe featuring OkmalumKoolkat.

And in the following year, Cassper established Family Tree Records, his own record label. It’s also in 2014 when he released his most popular song called Doc Shebeleza, titled after the Kwaito veteran named Doc Shabeleza who became an inspirational figure to Cassper. The single received positive reviews from Cassper’s fans and was even praised by the likes of Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

The newly established rapper soon followed his debut single with a first album, Tsholofelo named after his sister. It became an instant success and has brought recognition to Cassper from all over the world. The song even peaked at number 1 on iTunes South Africa for 2 consecutive months.

2015 to 2016: One concert after another

Tsholofelo became such a huge hit that Cassper released its platinum version and collaborated with artists like DJ Drama, Wizkid, Anatii and Casey Veggies. By the third quarter of 2015, Cassper announced a concert in Ticketpro Dome, Johannesburg where he wanted to fill all of the 20,000 seats in the stadium.

On the same day as the concert, Cassper released Refiloe, his second album. The concert became a sold-out event and everyone who attended received a complimentary copy of his latest album.

In 2016, Cassper also managed to have a successful concert in Orlando Stadium, Soweto, Johannesburg. The success of both of Cassper’s events allowed him to be ranked as the Hottest Rapper in Africa for 3 consecutive years since 2014.

2017 to 2019: More albums, more accolades

In 2017, Cassper released Tito Mboweni, the lead single of his third album Thuto released in May of the same year. Named after South Africa’s Minister of Finance and the former SARB governor, the song quickly trended with its clever use of the onomatopoeia ‘shaa shaa’, the sound of money notes alluding to Mboweni’s position.

A year later, Cassper released another album titled Sweet and Short which became an instant platinum hit the moment it was released.

2020 to present: Snagging awards left and right
