Gift of the Givers Celebrates 30 Years of Serving Humanity

For over 30 years, non-governmental organisation, The Gift of the Givers has served humanity unconditionally; assisting all of creation, irrespective of race, religion, colour, class, political affiliation or geographic location. South Africans know, if there’s a disaster, Gift of the Givers will always find a way – usually faster than the government can – to provide assistance to the victims.

“Our mission is simple: we react immediately to restore dignity to the most vulnerable affected by disasters,” says Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, Founder of the Gift of the Givers (and a man to whom many South Africans look as a shining example of how the country’s leaders should behave).

Last year, Dr Sooliman was named the Daily Maverick’s ‘South African Person of the Year’, a title that’s bestowed on “a person who has had the broadest or most significant impact on the country as a whole”.

The Gift of the Givers Foundation is the largest disaster relief organisation of African origin on the African continent. The organisation has delivered over R3 billion in aid to 42 countries worldwide, including South Africa. This week the organisation thanked everyone in SA and around the world – from individuals to corporations – who have supported Gift of the Givers in being able to bring hope and dignity to millions of people.

It all started on 6 August 1992 when a spiritual guide that Dr Sooliman met in Turkey changed his life – and those whom he’s helped – forever. The guide told him to start an organisation called (when translated) Gift of the Givers to help all people unconditionally and expect nothing in return. He said: “My son, I’m not asking you, I’m instructing you.”

He was told the organisation should serve people with love, kindness, compassion and mercy. “My son, remember that whatever you do is done through you and not by you,” he told Dr Sooliman, who says today that Gift of the Givers is a spiritual organisation, guided by a spiritual teacher.

Over the next 30 days Gift of the Givers’ social media pages will be showing all the work they’ve done around the world – Bosnia, the Philippines, Malawi, Zimbabwe and more – and what they plan for the future.
