City selects top graduates to join digital transformation

The City of Cape Town is excited to embark on its Digital Internship Programme to help build much-needed skills in South Africa. The graduate programme has attracted applications from more than 790 graduates, which confirm the City is a sought-after employer.

‘The graduate programme has attracted more than 790 applicants from universities across the Western Cape. Earlier this month the City selected 13 amazing young people with various degrees ranging from Astrophysics to Engineering and Computer Science, to Industrial Psychology.

‘The graduates are from the CPUT, UWC, and UCT and I’m excited to be leading this journey of digital change and growth with the youth. Through this programme the City provides the candidates with a 24-month internship and the opportunity to learn from the best professionals at the City and gain work experience.

‘What I hope to see from these candidates are flexibility, an inquisitive mind, a willingness to learn and grow, creative and innovative thinking, and a problem-solving attitude,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

The 13 candidates are from all over Cape Town – from Hout Bay, Southfield, Kuils River, Montana, Philippi East, and Mitchells Plain, to Elsies River, Goodwood, Delft, and Bellville.

The City launched its Digital Internship Programme in September 2022, an initiative of Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, to attract new talented graduates to join the City as we are embarking on our 10-year Digital Transformation Programme, referred to as the Core Application Refresh (CAR) Programme.

The CAR Programme will launch the City into the digital age over the next five to 10 years and will focus on improving service delivery, greater ease of doing business with the City, and attracting and retaining the best talent. The programme will see the latest, best-fit technology solutions being implemented for the City. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our interns to be a part of a cutting-edge digital transformation within the Public Sector context.

The CAR Programme will impact the whole City and lay the foundation to future-proof the administration for the next 20 years. The graduates will contribute to shaping our digital roadmap and ensuring that the City of Cape Town is a pioneer in this field.

‘Given that the interns will gain work experience, it will improve their chances of obtaining permanent employment, either in the City or elsewhere thereafter. The City prides itself on our commitment and investment in the youth and their personal growth and career development, and the Digital Graduate Recruitment Programme is a great platform to enable this.
