AKA’s parents have thanked his legion of fans for their love and support after the iconic South African musician was gunned down outside a venue in Florida Road, Durban, last night (Friday 10 Feb).

His parents said in a statement:

It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban Police.

To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend, most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kairo. To many he was AKA, SUPAMEGA, BHOVA and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as family to decide on the upcoming days.

We thank yuou for the love and support we have received thus far, and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord.

Tony and Lynn Forbes

A second male victim was also killed in the shocking incident.

AKA, who turned 35 on 28 January, was born and raised in Cape Town. His single ‘Victory Lap’ – off his debut album Altar Ego – rocketed him to fame in 2011. In April 2021, AKA’s fiancée Anele (Nellie) Tembe tragically fell to her death from a Cape Town hotel room.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe from the South African Police Service told SAPeople SAPS will issue a statement soon.
