US retail giant enters South African market in 2025
Major US retailer Walmart is launching its first stores in South Africa. Here’s when they open and what shoppers can expect.

Major US retail giant Walmart confirmed on Tuesday, 9 September, that it will open its first branded stores in South Africa in October 2025.
The move marks a significant step for Walmart, which has held a majority stake in Massmart since 2011.
Until now, Walmart has not displayed its brand on local storefronts.
Walmart comes to South Africa
Walmart International CEO Kath McLay said the new stores will stock groceries, household essentials, apparel, technology, and global brands, alongside locally sourced products. Suppliers selected at Walmart’s first South African Growth Summit earlier this year will also participate.
“The goal is to combine Walmart’s low prices and global standards with South Africa’s rich culture,” McLay said.
The company said it is designing the stores with wide aisles, modern layouts, and digital features to improve the shopping experience.
Massmart CEO Miles van Rensburg added that the rollout will prioritise low prices and strong customer service.
“We aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a shopping experience that reflects the needs of South Africans,” he said.
Walmart will announce store locations, recruitment plans, and community initiatives in the coming months. The company also said it plans to invest in jobs, local suppliers, and sustainability projects as part of its South African expansion.
