Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours, excessive lightning, small hail and damaging winds over western KwaZulu-Natal, western Limpopo, and parts of Mpumalanga’s Highveld and escarpment.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

Yellow level 2 Severe Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail and damaging winds are expected over the western parts of KwaZulu Natal, the western parts of Limpopo and in places over the Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga.

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS FOR SUNDAY

A Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, and danger to life is expected in places over the eastern half of the Eastern Cape on Sunday (23/11/2025).

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over Matzikama and Drakenstein municipalities of the Western Cape, and in places over the Northern Cape.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy with morning fog in places, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, but hot in the extreme north. Scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers can be expected.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is High

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect cloudy with morning fog patches in places, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers, except in the Lowveld, where it will be hot.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, it is partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers, except over the Lowveld.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect morning fog in the extreme east, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the east.

Free State

In Free State, morning fog patches in the east at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except over the western parts.

Northern Cape

The day will start with morning and evening fog patches in the west, otherwise fine and hot to very hot with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers over the extreme north-eastern parts. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate north-western, becoming fresh south-westerly by the afternoon.

Western Cape

Fine in the extreme northern parts, otherwise partly cloudy and warm to hot, but very hot in the north-east. It will be cool and windy over the Cape Peninsula. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate south-easterly, becoming fresh to strong along the west coast from the afternoon.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High.

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy at first, otherwise partly cloudy and warm, but hot in places in the north. The wind along the coast will be light and variable, becoming moderate to fresh south-easterly.

The Eastern half: The day will start partly cloudy and warm, becoming cloudy in places along the coast and the adjacent interior by the afternoon. Winds along the coast will be light and variable in the morning, becoming moderate south-easterly later.

KwaZulu-Natal

Morning fog over the central and western interior, otherwise cloudy and warm with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered in the west. The wind along the coast will be light to moderate westerly to south-westerly, becoming easterly to north-easterly from the afternoon.
