The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient breed bred to guard against wolves and leopards.

This breed ranks among the world’s largest, with males weighing up to 160 pounds.

The most distinctive feature is the mane-like fur around their necks and shoulders.

In China, the Tibetan Mastiff’s majestic appearance and fierce reputation make it a status symbol.

Consequently, prices for purebred Tibetan Mastiff puppies range from $2 000 (R37 481.20) to millions.

In 2014, a Tibetan Mastiff puppy fetched a staggering $1.95 million (R36.5 million), crowning it the world’s priciest dog.

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog holds the distinction of being Czechoslovakia’s national dog.

Its rarity contributes to its high cost.

Originating in 1955, it’s a cross between working-line German Shepherds and Carpathian wolves.

The goal was to combine German Shepherd intelligence with wolf pack mentality and endurance.

Owning a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog can cost around $50 000 (R937 030), and they’re mainly found in Czechoslovakia.

3. CHOW CHOW – R206 146

The Chow Chow, hailing from China, is an ancient and rare breed.

A Chow Chow puppy makes the most expensive dog breeds list, as it costs around $11 000 (R206 146), but the expenses don’t stop there.

The breed is prone to various health issues, like hip and elbow dysplasia and eye problems, leading to potential vet bills.

The Chow Chow’s stubborn nature makes training challenging.

Despite these challenges, under skilled handling, Chow Chows are great as pets and guard dogs.
