SASSA: How do I apply for social grants?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers financial help to South African citizens. Here’s how to apply for your social grant.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers financial help to South African citizens. Social grants include the Social Relief from Distress (SRD) Grant, the Disability Grant, the Older Persons (Pensioners or Elderly) Grant, and others.

You have the right to apply for the government’s social help. Anyone can apply for social grants. Many people don’t know there’s help out there, or they don’t know how to use it.

THE SOCIAL RELIEF FROM DISTRESS GRANT

Social Relief from Distress (SRD) Grants provide South Africans lacking an income with monthly assistance.

You can still apply for this grant, which was introduced during the COVID Lockdown.

You can apply for the SRD Grant at this link.

Apply with your documents, like your Identity Document and Proof of Income/Address.

SASSA REGIONAL OFFICES

You can also apply for social grants by visiting a regional office.

SASSA regional offices are closest to your registered address. Call your nearest office first, and make sure which documents are necessary.

Some grants, like Disability Grants, ask for additional documents and departments.

SASSA: GETTING YOUR DOCUMENTS READY

Make sure you have the right documents before your social grant application.

Documents are used for the means test. A means test considers your documentation for approval or rejection.

You will know whether your grant has been approved after its application.

Call your social grant office for feedback.

SASSA: WHICH GRANTS ARE THERE?

Various social grants exist.

There are grants for different things.

You can apply for Childcare (Foster) Grants, but also Disability Grants and Veteran’s Grants. Elderly (Older Persons) Grants are for the elderly population, and In-Aid Grants are for caregivers.
