SASSA pension: Five reasons you might be excluded

Here’s what you need to know in case your 2024 SASSA pension is reviewed by the agency and you’re suddenly excluded.

The 2024 SASSA pension disbursed by the South African Social Security Agency has enjoyed a recent increase in April. Moreover, the agency is there solely help all old-age pensioners over the age of 60 who need financial support in their later years.

However, it is also within their remit to exclude anyone who no longer complies with 2024 SASSA pension requirements. Consequently, you never need to reapply for a 2024 SASSA pension but, below, we will list all the reasons you can be excluded if your grant is reviewed …

Therefore, according to your 2024 SASSA pension will be jeapordised if you:

  1. No longer live permanently in South Africa.
  2. If you move into a state institution.
  3. You begin receiving payments from another social grant.
  4. Your circumstance change and your income exceeds R86 280 per year (if single), or R172 560 per year (if married).
  5. You accrue assets worth more than R1 227 600 (if single), or R2 455 200 (if married).

Furthermore, the agency can review anyone with a 2024 SASSA pension to ensure the above criteria is being adhered to. And the most common reason for exclusion is if beneficiaries’ means change and they no longer comply with the asset and means test.

And if your application is not approved, or you’re excluded after review, SASSA must inform you in writing. Thereafter, if you disagree with the decision, you may appeal to the Department of Social Development. Follow the highlighted link to find all the relevant forms. And make sure to lodge your appeal within 90 days.

Likewise, the point of the means test is to make sure people don’t take advantage of the social welfare system. Therefore, it is important to remember what counts as income in the eyes of SASSA:

  • A private pension.
  • Any money you earn from work and/or a business.
  • This included financial assistance from friends, relatives or children.
  • Earnings through a rental house/property.
  • Additional compensation from government sources like UIF, RAF or COIDA.
  • The property or land value in your name with an outstanding bond.
  • Any investments/shares in your name that have a certain value.

Furthermore, the 2024 SASSA pension for May will pay our R2 180 (over 60) and R2 200 (over 75) on Friday 3 May 2024. Also note that while traditional leaders are up in arms over the closer of SASSA cash points, bank payments will still take between 2-3 days to reflect in bank accounts.
