A 56-year-old woman working in the taxi industry was shot dead while attending a meeting on Thursday, national taxi umbrella body SANTACO confirmed.

According to SABC News, the woman was shot on Thursday, 4 May. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Western Cape, Wesley Twigg, said the woman was attending a meeting when the incident occurred.

The woman sustained a wound to her body and was declared dead at the scene by first responders. Twigg said the motive for the attack is unknown at this stage. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.

Mandla Hermanus, the SANTACO Western Cape Chairperson, identified the victim as Charmaine Bailey, a CATA Regional Taxi Council training officer and secretary for her primary taxi association.

“The circumstances around the incident are not yet clear, but the executive committee of that region has called an urgent meeting to look into this.

“We convey our sincere condolences to her family. We are appealing to anyone with information to contact law enforcement agencies so that the killers can be brought to book,” said Hermanus, according to SABC News.
