Miss Universe owner files for bankruptcy, here’s what we know

Miss Universe owner has filed for bankruptcy just days before the 72nd annual pageant on Saturday 18 November in El Salvador.

JKN Global Group, the owner of the Miss Universe pageant has filed for bankruptcy in Thailand just a few days ahead of the 72nd pageant taking place in El Salvador on Saturday 18 November.

MISS UNIVERSE OWNER FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY

JKN Global Group, the company who owns the international pageant, has filed for bankruptcy in Thailand. This comes just a few days ahead of the 72nd pageant scheduled to take place at José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador on Saturday, 18 November.

According to Hola! The media distribution company assured fans that the upcoming pageant will continued as planned.

The JKN Global Group acquired the the esteemed pageant in 2022 with a $20 million (R363 million) deal. The company is led by Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip – a TV personality and transgender rights advocate.

The JKN Global Group confirmed that they have submitted a petition for “business rehabilitation.” This is known as a process akin to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States, which has been accepted by Thailand’s bankruptcy court.

THE 2023 BEAUTY PAGEANT

  • The pageant will be broadcasted live on SABC 3 (DStv channel 193) from 3:00 on Sunday, 19 November. This is because of the time difference. The pageant will also be repeated at 19:30 on Sunday.
  • This will be the 72nd Miss Universe pageant and will be held at the José Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador.
  • Miss Universe R’Bonney Gabriel (US) is the reigning Miss Universe and will crown her successor at the end of the pageant.
  • For the first time, the Miss Universe Organisation allowed married women and mothers to compete in the international pageant. Rikkie Kollé of the Netherlands and Marina Machete of Portugal are the second and third transgender entrants to compete at the pageant, following Ángela Ponce of Spain in 2018.
  • Camila Avella of Colombia and Michelle Cohn of Guatemala are the first married women and mothers to compete.
  • According to a press release by the Miss SA Organisation, the 72nd edition of the pageant also marks the debut of Pakistan.
  • While marking the return of Denmark, Egypt, Guyana, Hungary, Ireland, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Mongolia, Norway and Zimbabwe to the competition.
