Akani Simbine confirmed his form and Olympic medal credentials by finishing second behind American Ronnie Baker in the men’s 100m at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco on Friday night.

In the same meeting, long jumper Ruswahl Samaai finished fifth to continue his build-up to Tokyo.

There was drama in the blocks ahead of the 100m after Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut false started, meaning the racers had to reload. Simbine had also looked to have moved before the gun, but Vicaut had gone first. After a short appeal the Frenchman was re-instated.

At the second attempt, Baker blasted out of the blocks before settling into his silky-smooth action to break the tape in 9.91.

Simbine, who had a few days earlier broken the African record with a 9.84sec run in Hungary, finished strongly to take second in 9.98, while Marcell Jacobs of Italy took third place.

Simbine tweeted humbly “we had a positive week”, as he looks forward to the Tokyo Olympics!
