The students at Fish Hoek High School are inspiring South Africans around the country, after they crocheted over 100 octopuses for a VERY good cause.

The school posted a photo this week, after accepting a challenge from Fish Hoek Primary School to crochet 100 octopuses for premature babies at various hospitals!

”This is what 122 octopuses look like! ?” said the school. They explained that “research shows that the tentacles of a stuffed octopus can comfort babies because it reminds them of the umbilical cord, which makes them feel safe and secure.”

One mom posted an adorable photo of her premature baby sleeping soundly with a crocheted octopus, and said: “ Brilliant project ? I really believe my son was very comforted by his octopus whilst in NICU. Xx”

Fish Hoek High School said its staff, learners and their families all took on the project to achieve “this colourful consortium of octopuses! ?” Here’s the full pic of all 122 octopuses:

And they are not only making a difference with their community spirit and contribution, but they’ve inspired people across the nation. Several Facebook users, like this one, asked for a pattern: “Please can you send a pattern and the type of wool that you used. Like to try it out and give to the hospital in Nelspruit. Just recently moved here from Krugersdorp. Thanks.”

There were others who wanted to help in the Northern Cape, Western Cape, KZN and other spots.

If you’d like to make a difference for a premature baby, here’s the pattern from Fish Hoek High School:

P.S. The plural of octopus is one of the most debated topics with all three of the following considered acceptable: octopi, octopuses, and octopodes.
