Miss Universe 2017, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, flew in to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning. It is her first visit back home to South Africa, since she was crowned Miss Universe last year and relocated to New York.

Demi-Leigh was met by family, friends, fans… and a furry creature too – her pet dog. She was also met by a high profile delegation including South Africa’s Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa and Women Minister Susan Shabangu.

Demi-Leigh told the crowd: “This is not a personal victory. This is a victory for the whole country. And I hope that this win will inspire every young girl and every young boy that has a dream to realise that nothing is unreachable – that if you set your mind to something, and you’re willing to work hard and be dedicated, anything is possible.”

Demi-Leigh will be attending various engagements across the country (including a welcome party at Cape Town International), taking photos with fans, and presenting the victims of the Knysna fire with funds she has raised. She’ll also be treated to a street parade in her nearby hometown of Sedgefield.

With a week of celebrations in store, including a welcome party at Cape Town International, Demi-Leigh said South Africa is “comprised of many different backgrounds and cultures‚ one of the many things that makes me immensely proud to be a South African. I am very excited to celebrate this achievement with my people in the spirit of Mzansi.”
