Delivering a keynote address at the Demand Side Management Indaba on Monday, 24 April, Makwana said that the group had shortlisted five candidates for the position.

He did not mention any of the candidates by name, but said that it was part of the power utility’s goal of resolving the power crisis and bringing an end to load shedding.

De Ruyter joined the utility in late 2019 and resigned in December last year, after he claimed to be poisoned in the Eskom office.

He was due to stay on until April 2023, but left the embattled utility abruptly in February following an explosive interview in which he accused a “senior politician” of being involved in corruption at Eskom.

Meanwhile, after 30 years of service at the utility, Eskom Chief Operating Officer Jan Oberholzer will also leave the company when he retires this month.
