While Williams has been brilliant for Sundowns this season, setting a new PSL record for the most cleansheets (18) in a single season, Hunt feels the award should be won by an outfield player.

According to Hunt, a goalkeeper should win the accolade if their team struggled throughout the season, and that’s not the case with Sundowns.

In his own words, Hunt believes Teboho Mokoena should easily win the award from the current Sundowns team.

GAVIN HUNT SNUBS RONWEN WILLIAMS FOR PLAYER OF THE SEASON AWARD

“Ronwen? I don’t think a goalkeeper should win the Player of the Year,” Hunt told reporters in Tshwane on Tuesday.

“No chance, that means your team has been struggling, defending. I think he has had a magnificent season but I don’t think he should win the Player of the Year [award].

“But I think he has been brilliant. But that is not a good sign, isn’t it? If the goalkeeper is the Player of the Year…

“Based on the team that they got, I think Mokoena has been the Player of the Year for me,” concluded Hunt.

RONWEN WILLIAMS SETS NEW PSL RECORD

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has cast his name on the history books of PSL football following his team’s 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants.

The two sides faced off in the league on Saturday night for their 29th match of the season, and the win took Sundowns to 69 points.

Thapelo Morena opened the scoring for Sundowns in the first half before Themba Zwane wrapped up the game with a second half goal.

Now, with Sundowns keeping a cleansheet on the night, this took Williams’ number of cleansheets for the current season to a whopping 18 in the league.

And that’s a new record for a goalkeeper since the inception of PSL in 1996, and it is only right to call him the new king of cleansheets.

The previous record (17) was held by Moeneeb Josephs who set it during the 2009-10 season whilst on the books of Orlando Pirates.
