SAPeople follower Kate Gregor wasn’t the only one surprised this morning (Mon 30 Oct) to drive into a winter wonderland on her way home from Durban to Johannesburg. An avalanche of videos showing a blanket of snow over Van Reenen’s Pass have hit social media, and Kate’s gorgeous photos on this page are testament to just how much fell!

It’s surprising since South Africa is well into Spring, and on Wednesday it’s the 1st of November! However the snow was very real, and the conditions so cold that the snow was able to collect on the ground.

Van Reenen’s Pass is the famous half-way mark that all travellers between Durban and Joburg pass through, as the N3 freeway passes through the Drakensberg mountains. The northern end of the pass is situated at the border of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) said the “disruptive snowfall in the western KwaZulu-Natal and extreme Eastern Free State” is not expected to continue tomorrow BUT the lower temperatures and “very cold conditions” will persist.
