To keep you up to date with which supermarket has the best prices, we’ve been doing a monthly basket comparison. However, due to the sheer volume of interest from our readers on which supermarket has the best prices, we’ve decided to do weekly articles on the topic.

Last week, through the wonderful feedback from YOU, we discovered that Shoprite is South Africa’s favourite supermarket right now, with over 50% in the unofficial vote. Popularity and loyalty through a rewards program is one thing, but which supermarket offers the best prices for a standard basket of groceries?

WHO HAS THE BEST PRICES THIS WEEK?

This week, SA’s big four rank as follows for the best prices:

  1. Checkers: R785.83
  2. Shoprite: R793.83
  3. Pick n Pay: R827.83
  4. Woolworths: R870.83

We find this result very interesting considering how much loyalty and support was shown to Shoprite on our social media channels, and yet Checkers is cheaper. Similarly, Woolworths ranks reasonably well versus Pick n Pay considering its perception as a much more expensive supermarket.

Of course, everyone’s shopping habits differs but we wanted to find 17 comparable household items to see which supermarket has the best prices. We do not consider discounts or card-holder specials in this comparison (it would make it far-too complex). And when the same brand items are not available (this happened most often at Woolworths) we use the nearest and cheapest house-brand alternative:
