Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez has shared details on how he has changed his approach to his racing this season.

Checo finished second behind teammate Max Verstappen in the opening Formula One race in Bahrain last week.

The Mexican driver started strong last year, claiming wins at two of the opening four race weekends but faded after the Miami GP.

PEREZ AIMS FOR A BETTER SEASON

His win in Azerbaijan proved to be his last of the campaign though, with Verstappen running away with the title.

“Obviously, it’s not like I forget to drive from one weekend to the other,” said Perez told F1’s Beyond The Grid podcast.

“There were reasons behind it. We understood them and I think we are in a better shape. I think just being able to focus on the right approach for the entire weekend – getting quali done properly, making that progression,” he said.

Perez started fifth in Bahrain but went on to finish second in the main race.

The 34-year-old says improving from Friday to Sunday would be key for him to improve this season.

“I think what happened last year was that we lacked a lot of progression through the weekend.”

I think it’s just maximising every single opportunity. It’s a 24-race calendar, and race-by-race, having that evolution and maximising the opportunities. I know if I’m able to do that, I will have a great year,” Perez said.
