All you need to know about South Africa’s new number plate system

Motorists in Gauteng will soon be legally required to get new number plates. Here is more information.

Motorists in Gauteng will be legally required to get the new number plates when they renew their licence discs. 

NEW NUMBER PLATE SYSTEM: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi says the province will launch new number plates in April 2024. 

The new plates are designed to be tamper-proof and will be fitted with a QR code linked to the vehicle’s owner.

THE NEW NUMBER PLATES WILL BE LAUNCHED IN APRIL 

During an interview with eNCA discussing the launch of CCTV cameras around the country.

Lesufi furthermore said that most crimes in Gauteng involve a car, and having a robust licencing regime will help tackle crime in the province.

He was speaking this week at an event to sign a memorandum of understanding between the Gauteng government and technology firm Vumacam.

This will give the province access to the feed from the company’s 6,900 cameras spread across the province.

“Every crime, especially violent crime in our province, including cash heists, kidnapping, murder, a car is involved. 

“Our licencing regime was very bad. So, we will launch new number plates in Gauteng from the first of April.” – said Lesufi.

HERE IS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Every person who has a car must re-register and get a new registration number that cannot be copied and is reliable. 
  • The new registration plates are part of the premier’s campaign to fight crime. 
  • Meanwhile, if you spend 30 consecutive days in Gauteng, it means your car must be registered in Gauteng. 
  • A prototype of the new plates was supposed to be unveiled in December 2023. Lesufi said that it will be shown to the public on Monday, 19 February.
  • The new plates are designed to be tamper-proof and will be fitted with a QR code linked to the vehicle’s owner.
