Basic Education Minister, Mrs Angie Motshekga is expected tomorrow, Wednesday 17 January, to be joined by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane at an event to mark the official opening of schools.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ACTIVITY FOR BASIC EDUCATION MINISTER

The Minister, Gauteng premier and MEC for Education will visit Kgatoentle Secondary School in Garankuwa, Tshwane West, where a walk-about and then program will be hosted in the school hall.

This event replaces the initial plan by the Basic Education Minister and the Gauteng leadership to hand over a new school in Midrand. The handover of Mayibuye Primary School was abruptly cancelled due to weather concerns.

RAINFALL TO HIT A NUMBER OF PROVINCES ON FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Meanwhile, hundreds of children will be moving on to the next grades while the little ones will begin their first chapter of a 12-year schooling journey.
As mixed emotions are expected to fill hundreds of schools tomorrow, mixed weather is also expected to be part of the scenes.

KZN AMONG PROVINCES TO EXPERIENCE BAD WEATHER

According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), disruptive rainfall will hit several regions in the country, including KZN and Gauteng.
The weather is predicted as follows for regions with potential rainfall:

  • Orange level 5 warning: disruptive rainfall which may lead to widespread flooding of roads and settlements, damage to mud-based houses and displacement of communities along the coast and northern parts of KZN.
  • .Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of susceptible formal/informal settlements, low-lying roads and bridges is expected over the western and southern interior of KZN, Mpumalanga, Limpopo (except the extreme northern parts), Gauteng and the eastern parts of the North West and Free State provinces.
