Social media users around the world thought their Facebook and Instagram accounts were hacked during the global outage on Tuesday.

WHO ELSE THOUGHT THEY WERE HACKED WITH THE FACEBOOK OUTAGE?

Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram experienced a two-hour outage that was caused by a technical issue and impacted hundreds of thousands of users globally.

The disruptions started on Tuesday afternoon, with many users saying on rival social media platform X they had been booted out of Facebook and Instagram and were unable to log in.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS WERE UNABLE TO LOG IN

The outage was among the top trending topics on X, formerly Twitter, with the platform’s owner Elon Musk taking a shot at Meta with a post that said: “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working”.

On Wednesday, it seemed that everything was sorted, but no official reason had been given for the outage.

NO OFFICIAL REASON HAS BEEN GIVEN FOR THE OUTAGE

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said the issue was resolved on Tuesday and apologised on behalf of the tech giant without revealing much in terms of details.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologise for any inconvenience,”Stone said.

These include changes to your information that you did not implement any suspicious activity you have not initiated:

  • Your name, birthday, email, or password suddenly changes.
  • Friend requests from your account are sent to people you don’t know.
  • Messages you did not write are sent from your account.
  • Posts you did not create are appearing on your timeline.
