Cash-strapped motorists are feeling the pinch as 50ppm, or 0.005%, diesel is now retailing at R23.28 inland and R22.57 at the coast. Therefore, to fill a Toyota Hilux with an 80-litre tank will cost R1 862 inland and R1 805 at the coast.

According to the Toyota Hilux’s claimed/combined fuel consumption on the popular 2.8GD-6 turbodiesel automatic, you can travel roughly 888 km per tank. That now equates to R2.10 per kilometre travelled. If you own one of the less expensive and more frugal 2.4GD-6 derivatives (also with an 80-litre tank), you can travel roughly 941 km per tank and this will only cost you R1.97 per kilometre.
