Mangaung prison is no stranger to dodgy deals

A prisoner’s rights activist has opened up about the dodgy dealings alleged to have gone on at the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

Female prison guards at Mangaung Prison have allegedly been part of a prostitution ring that’s run by a powerful syndicate of inmates and guards, Sunday Times reported, adding that a recently leaked document compiled by the department of correctional services (DCS) revealed that those who raised suspicions were poisoned.

According to ZiMoja, the South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights (SAPOHR) said reports of shady dealings of sexual trade between inmates and wardens at the Mangaung are not far-fetched. 

SAPOHR activist Golden Miles Bhudu was reported to have also said such dealings have been taking place for decades.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo has reportedly acknowledged a recently leaked document on the matter. The notorious Facebook rapist Thabo Bester was also reportedly roped in the matter.

“That investigation is yet to be concluded as some parts of it relate to the escape of Thabo Bester and that is the subject of court and the investigations in that respect have never been closed,’ Nxumalo was quoted as saying.

THABO BESTER AND DR NANDIPHA’S NEXT COURT APPEARANCE

Thabo Bester and his girlfriend, disgraced doctor, Nandipha Magudumana are expected to be back in court on 21 February, eNCA reported. The love birds will be seeing each other for the first time this year at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court.

Bester is currently behind bars at the C-Max section of Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre. He was moved to the prison after he successfully escaped from Mangaung correctional facility in May 2022.

Dr Nandipha Magudumana on the other hand will be joining him in court, coming from the Bizzah Makhate Correctional Centre in Kroonstad.
