Michelle Obama’s final speech as the United States’ First Lady has made headlines around the world for its power-packed words of inspiration about what got her and President Barack Obama through their years in the White House, and through their lives: the power of hope.

It’s a speech that is as relevant to South Africans as it is to Americans. Watch excerpts below.

She said “When you are struggling and you start thinking about giving up, I want you to remember… the power of hope” and that “our glorious diversity … is not a threat to who we are. It makes us who we are.”

The President’s wife was speaking as the School Counsellor of the Year Event.
