The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has praised the collaborative efforts of universities and Student Representative Councils (SRCs) in ensuring the smooth implementation of February allowance payments.

This commendation follows a recent media briefing on 4 March. During this briefing, NSFAS announced that universities would oversee allowance disbursements for February and March of the same year.

NSFAS disclosed in a weekend statement that 25 out of 26 universities had successfully distributed February allowances. These distributions were in accordance with their agreed-upon schedules.

These allowances encompass various necessities such as book fees, accommodation expenses, transportation costs, food, and personal care allowances.

UNISA FINALISING ALLOCATION PROCESS

NSFAS emphasised ongoing efforts, with UNISA finalising allocation based on students’ registered modules.

Additionally, all universities are tasked with managing the disbursement of March allowances.

“The University of South Africa (UNISA) is finalising the process of determining allowances based on the number of modules registered by students. All the universities will also be handling the payment of March allowance,” NSFAS affirmed.

Furthermore, the scheme urged institutions to facilitate direct payment service providers during students’ onboarding procedures. Simultaneously, it emphasised the importance of ensuring the continuation of payments. Universities were also reminded that direct payments for allowances pertaining to the 2024 academic year are set to commence in April.

NSFAS BEGINS TVET ALLOWANCE PAYMENTS

In another development, NSFAS announced the commencement of allowance payments for Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges starting from 6 March. Further details regarding these processes are expected to be provided by NSFAS in the forthcoming week.

“The process of the payment of allowances to Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges commenced on 6 March 2024 and NSFAS will provide further details on these processes within by the forthcoming week,” NSFAS stated.

NSFAS commends collaboration among universities and SRCs for timely financial assistance to students. This fosters a conducive learning environment.
