Springboks head coach, Rassie Erasmus, has unveiled a reshaped coaching setup for the Springboks. The move signals a strategic shift as the team prepares for a 13-Test season and embarks on a new Rugby World Cup cycle.

Erasmus introduced new coaches Tony Brown (attack) and Jerry Flannery (defence) during a Cape Town media briefing, emphasising the need to evolve the team’s playing style. “We need to evolve our game once more, as teams will definitely have looked at how we play, and how they think they can stop us,” Erasmus commented.

FRESH VOICES FOR SPRINGBOK REVAMP

Brown, formerly a star All Black flyhalf, brings a wealth of experience and fresh attacking perspective. “It’s a privilege to be involved with the Springboks,” he stated.

“My goal is to ensure that we can continue to bring the best out of [the players] on the field.” Flannery, a former Ireland hooker, will now oversee the renowned Springbok defence. “I’m honoured to be part of the Springbok coaching team,” he said. “Hopefully, I can make a solid contribution as we look to build on what the team has achieved in the last few seasons.”

REVAMP EXTENDS TO PERFORMANCE AND SUPPORT

Erasmus has also bolstered the team’s analytics with the addition of Paddy Sullivan as performance analyst. Sullivan previously consulted for the Springboks at the 2023 World Cup.

Former top referee Jaco Peyper joins the management team as Laws Adviser. “The way the Laws are interpreted and blown is always evolving,” explained Erasmus, “and we need expert insight so we can always stay on the right side of the Laws.”

This revamped management team, designed to stay ahead in a competitive rugby landscape, will be tested first against Wales at Twickenham on 22 June.

“This is a watershed year for South African rugby,” said Erasmus. “I’m excited about the coaching and management team we’ve put together and really looking forward to getting out there once again.”
