FINANCE MINISTER CONFIRMS INCREASE

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed that the R350 SRD grant will be increased to R370 in April this year.

“I am pleased to say that we have found consensus that in between, subject to the finalisation of the comprehensive social security [programme], we’ll increase the R350 to R370 by the 1st of April this year. That is part of the progressive realisation of the basic rights of our people,” he said.

As previously reported, in his State of the Nation Address, said that the grant is going to continue, and the R350 will be improved.

“In the midst of the pandemic, we introduced the special SRD grant, which currently reaches some 9 million unemployed people every month. We have seen the benefits of this grant and will extend it and improve it as the next step towards income support for the unemployed,” he said.

CALL FOR INCREASE TO BE REJECTED

Following the announcement the Universal Basic Income Coalition (UBIC) said the R20 increase is an insult.

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, UBIC spokesperson Bukelwa Hans said the R370 SRD grant must be rejected by Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu.

“The increase is a meagre improvement and an insulting pittance given the cost of living and increases in inflation since 2020. To only increase this by R20 is an insult, and we cannot accept it,” Hans said.
