Despite the ANC welcoming the ‘voluntary’ resignation of South African North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo, it appears he has NOT yet resigned. He was expected to make his resignation official today.

In an interview with eNCA on Wednesday morning, Mahumapelo said he is waiting for his PEC, who are meeting, to tell him their decision on whether he must resign. He said he doesn’t account to himself but to their leadership.

His press briefing has also been postponed because of “new developments”.

Earlier, the African National Congress (ANC) of North West had welcomed Mahumapelo’s resignation with “great pride”.

“The African National Congress (ANC) in Bokone Bophirima accepts with a sense of apprehension – but great pride – the decision by our Provincial Chairperson, Cde Supra “SOR” Mahumapelo to voluntarily exit from his deployment as Premier.

“We are proud of him for having introduced the Five Concretes to implement the National Development Plan (NDP),” the party said in a statement.

The ANC said that as an organisation they will forever be appreciative and learn from his emphatic‚ principled but simple approach to issues.

The ruling party also urged the premier to continue working for the ANC in any role that is given to him.

“We urge him to remain steadfast in what he believes are the necessary tasks of executing the revolution‚” the statement said.

The ANC also acknowledged the work Mahumapelo did during his term.

“In his 35 years of revolutionary activism in the ANC‚ he has mastered the art of remaining simple and humble at all times‚ despite sustained concocted attacks against him by some friends and comrades‚” said Speaker of the NWP Legislature, Susana Dantjie.

Calls for Mahumapelo’s resignation follows after a long strike and protests that took place in the provincial capital of Mahikeng, and subsequent pressure from his party leadership. President Ramaphosa had been forced to cut short a trip to London because of the unrest in the North West. Residents in the region have been protesting against a general collapse of services and recurring allegations of corruption by Mahumapelo, including an alleged close relationship with the Guptas.
