Weather warnings issued for several parts of SA

Th South African Weather Service has issued several weather warnings for adverse conditions in various parts of the country.

Adverse weather conditions including thunderstorms, hail, heavy rain and damaging winds are expected in parts of the country this weekend.

This is according to impact based warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). The warnings are valid from Saturday, 23 March.

ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITONS EXPECTED IN PARTS OF SA

The weather service issued a yellow level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms in the Western Cape.

According to SAWS, a cut-off low pressure system is expected to produce showers and thundershowers over the Namakwa District and the Western Cape.

“These thundershowers are expected to be severe over the Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and the interior of Namakwa on Saturday. This will result in rapid heavy downpours between 20 – 40mm, lightning, heavy rain and large amounts of small hail,” the weather service said.

Severe thunderstorms are also expected in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga on Saturday.

Isolated to scattered thundershowers are expected over the western Bushveld of Limpopo.

According to to the weather service, some of these storms may be come severe with heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds.

VERY STRONG AND DAMAGING WINDS FORECAST FOR THE EASTERN CAPE

In addition, SAWS also issued a yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds in the Eastern Cape.

Very strong and north-easterly winds reaching gusts up to 40KT are expected to lead to very rough seas. Wave heights are expected to reach up to 5m.

“The combination of winds and waves are expected to result in difficulty in navigation and small vessels taking on water,” SAWS warned.
