‘I built my wealth’: A housewife was left baffled after discovering her husband had R273m in hidden assets during their divorce proceedings.

A Shanghai woman was left clutching at her chest after discovering just how much her husband was worth only after she filed for divorce. The woman, who goes by the pseudonym Yu Hong, heard how her husband owns 18 commercial properties and a number of other successful businesses and is worth around 100 million yuan (around R273 million.)

Her husband, who hid his worth and tried to give away his property as a gift to a daughter from a previous marriage, argued that Hong was “just a housewife” and didn’t have a right to any of his money.

As part of the divorce application, the court investigated the couples assets and finances, South China Morning Post reports.

The court also learned that the man had “gifted” his 18 properties to his daughter from a previous relationship.

GETTING HER FAIR SHARE

After the wealth was uncovered, the man argued that Hong did not deserve any of his money because she was “just a housewife”.

“I built my wealth. She is just a housewife who didn’t work,” he reportedly told the court.

He also said that he was planning to give the child he shares with Hong even more valuable properties than he gave his other daughter.

The court than ruled that the properties he gifted to his daughter are to returned and that his wife Hong deserves a share of the assets despite that fact that she was not employed during their marriage.
