Lace up your trainers for South Africa’s legendary marathons
Legendary marathons in South Africa await! From the Comrades to the Big Five, discover the top races to add to your 2026 running calendar.
If you are a South African living abroad, you likely miss the unique atmosphere that comes with a local road race.
There is something special about the early morning chill, the smell of deep heat in the starting pen, and the incredible support from spectators along the route.
Consequently, South Africa is home to some of the most iconic races in the world, and many of our expats fly back annually just to cross these finish lines.
The ultimate human race: Comrades Marathon
For many runners, the Comrades Marathon is the holy grail of long-distance running. This ultramarathon is the oldest and largest of its kind globally, alternating each year between an “up” and “down” run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
The 2026 Comrades Marathon is set for Sunday, 14 June, and it will be an “up” run starting at the Durban City Hall. It is a gruelling test of endurance covering approximately 89km, but the sense of unity on the road is what makes it a bucket-list event for any serious athlete.
Breathtaking views at the Two Oceans Marathon
Often called “the world’s most beautiful marathon,” the Two Oceans Marathon takes you on a spectacular route around the Cape Peninsula. The 2026 Two Oceans Marathon weekend is confirmed for 11 and 12 April.
The 56km ultra-marathon takes place on the Saturday, leading runners over the iconic Chapman’s Peak and Constantia Nek. If you aren’t quite ready for the ultra distance, the half-marathon on Sunday offers an equally electric environment and stunning scenery.
Running through history at the Soweto Marathon
The Soweto Marathon, or “The People’s Race”, is a deeply moving experience that takes you past historic landmarks like Vilakazi Street and the Hector Pieterson Memorial. The 2026 Soweto Marathon is generally scheduled for November.
It is a challenging, undulating course, but the spirit of the Soweto community is unmatched. You will find yourself encouraged by residents every step of the way, making it a truly authentic South African experience.
Chasing major status with the Cape Town Marathon
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is currently on a journey to become an Abbott World Marathon Major. In an exciting shift for the 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, the race has moved to 24 May.
This event is perfect for those looking for a fast, flat course that showcases the best of the Mother City. It is professionally organised to international standards and attracts elite athletes from across the globe.
Experience the wild at the Big Five Marathon
If you want a race that truly captures the heart of the African bush, the Big Five Marathon is a must-do adventure. Held in the Entabeni Game Reserve in Limpopo, this race allows you to run through the natural habitat of the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo.
The 2026 Big Five Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, 13 June. It is widely considered one of the toughest marathons in the world due to the brutal sun, deep sand, and a massive elevation gain of over 500 metres.
However, the chance to run alongside giraffes and zebras in a malaria-free reserve makes the physical challenge well worth the effort.
