Real Madrid legend Marcelo has explained how his ‘shibobo’ outwitted former PSL star Percy Tau at Fifa Club World Cup. Marcelo spoke about the ‘shibobo’ moment after his Brazilian side Fluminense defeated Tau’s Al Ahly 2-0 on December 18 2023. The semifinal match took place at King Abdullah Sports Stadium in Saudi Arabia. The former Madrid defender spoke to Saudi Sports Company (SSC) about nutmegging the Bafana Bafana winger. “I try to do different things all the time,” he said about the nutmeg, which is called shibobo in Mzansi football.

DID MADRID LEGEND’S SHIBOBO ‘CON’ TAU INTO A FOUL?

The 35-year-old insisted that it was not his wish to ‘con’ Tau into committing a foul that led to the penalty. Marcelo explained: “At that moment, we were attacking, and I did not think about what would happen. I was thinking about dribbling and entering the penalty area to create a scoring opportunity or something like that. I got a foul and a penalty kick after dribbling, but I wasn’t thinking about that.”

HOW TAU FELL INTO MADRID LEGEND’S SHIBOBO TO COST AL AHLY A GOAL

The spiky-haired Fluminese right-back slotted the ball in between Tau’s legs in a typical Shibobo fashion. The former PSL Player-of-the-Year reacted by fouling the Brazilian, whose side eventually earned the penalty. Jhon Arias stepped forward to score from the dreaded spot in the 71st minute.

Tau eventually made way for Karim Fouad with 15 minutes remaining on the clock. With the Lion of Judah substituted, Fluminense eventually cushioned their lead. The South Americans scored on the stroke of full-time through John Kennedy’s strike.

ANTI-CLIMAX FOR AL AHLY AFTER A BRIGHT START

It was some sort of an anti-climax for the CAF Champions League kings, Al Ahly. The Egyptian football landlords had kick-started their Fifa Club World Cup adventure with a bang. Al Ahly dispatched Karim Benzema’s Al Ittihad 3-1 days ago. The former Madrid star even fluffed a penalty opportunity for the Saudi Pro League outfit in that match.

WHAT NEXT NOW FOR MOSIMANE’S FORMER EMPLOYERS?

Now, Pitso Mosimane’s former employers Al Ahly wind up their campaign by facing either Manchester City or Urawa Reds on December 22 2023. The identity of the next opposition for Tau and company will be determined by the outcome of City versus Reds’ meeting. The second last-four game is scheduled for December 19 2023. Marcelo’s Brazilian side will now date either the Premier League champions or their Japanese counterparts in the final.
