Mamelodi Sundowns have been on a shopping spree and that means there’s limited space in the squad for players wanting game time.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS FOREIGN QUOTA IS AN ISSUE

The arrival of Argentine playmaker Matias Esquivel has necessitated the opening of a foreign slot in the squad. Esquivel can only be registered if another foreign player is de-registered first. Divine Lunga and Abubeker Nasir are two options, but so is Junior Mendieta. Esquivel’s compatriot arrived at the club for R12 Million at the start of the campaign but hasn’t settled in as planned.

“The way things are now Matias (Esquivel) will take the place of his countryman Junior Mendieta who is out injured and his injury will apparently keep him out for the rest of the season. You know the team was looking at deregistering two of their foreign players but this condition will give them the chance to even register Esquivel without even deregistering those players. That’s what they are working on now so that he can start playing as soon as the season resumes after the Afcon break,” said one source to Soccer-Laduma.
