Mamelodi Sundowns finds itself on the cusp of finalising a deal with the highly-regarded Lanús midfielder, Matías Esquivel.

At the age of 24, Esquivel has emerged as one of the standout performers in the Argentine top-flight league this season, garnering attention from both South America and Europe.

Mamelodi Sundowns has successfully secured personal terms with the versatile left-footed playmaker, known for his ability to play as a central midfielder, winger, or inside forward. 

The agreement spans an enticing four-year contract for Esquivel.

While reports from Argentina suggest that the deal has already been concluded, according to iDiski Times Sundowns is still actively negotiating the transfer fee. 

Esquivel, with two years remaining on his current contract with Lanús, adds an additional layer of complexity to the negotiation process.

The strategic acquisition of Esquivel is poised to fill the void left by Erwin Saavedra at Chloorkop.

Saavedra’s future has been marred by uncertainty due to recurring injury setbacks since his arrival from Club Bolivar. 

In contrast, Gaston Sirino has solidified his status with South African citizenship.

In the midst of these developments, Abubeker Nasir has surfaced in rumours linked to a potential loan move away from the club.

The decision of the technical team regarding Nasir’s future, alongside other potential changes, is eagerly awaited in the coming weeks.

Esquivel’s impressive record at Lanús boasts seven goals and 12 assists in 95 games, primarily featuring as a central midfielder within a midfield trio. 

The imminent addition of this dynamic player to the Sundowns roster injects an exciting dimension into the team’s prospects, elevating expectations for the seasons ahead.

CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SITUATION 

Sundowns currently top Group A, with TP Mazembe, Nouadibhou, and Pyramids all tied at four points each after three games.

Following a goalless draw at Loftus Versfeld, Sundowns are set to confront the leaders of the Egyptian Premier League. 

The team is aware that they must then journey to Mauritania before concluding the group stage against Mazembe in Tshwane come March.
